Surfing Anyone? Saltburn By The Sea

We visited Saltburn by the Sea. It was a Victoria resort. The first pier was built here in 1869.
The developer, John Anderson, built a hotel on the cliff above the beach.  He developed a tramway. You can see the tram ascending and descending

Saltburn is a surfing Mecca. Wet suits and surf boards were available for those brave enough to face the cold sea. And there were plenty.

You could also rent horses for a ride along the beach.

We walked along the beach.

We rode the funicular-cable railway on a mountainside or cliff- for a pound.

The tram design is unique with counter balancing water tanks. It is the earliest surviving example of an operating funicular in Great Britain. The car at the top tank fills with water which causes it to descend pulling up the car at the bottom at the same time.

Here are some of the Victorian homes built on the cliff overlooking the sea.

This one had a date on it.
