River Tees Historical Past

Middlesbrough (where we go for District Meetings)  is located on the River Tees.  We visited the library (Dorman Museum) and learned the town was named for middle place for crossing the Tees River.  The settlement started in 1853 by Royal Charter.  Excavations have found life from the Iron Age, Anglo-Saxon, Roman, and Victorian ages
This dug-out canoe (found in 1926) dates back 3000 years... having been used for transportation along the river.
The river was the center of growth for a host of industries which sprung up... including steel works which provided the steel materials for the Sidney Bridge, and much of the railroad tracks in early industrial England.  We always enjoy pictures of sheep sheering as they gathered wool.
Down the road is the landmark church whose steeple can be seen for miles in Middlebrough.
We will return in the spring to visit the local park and shops.
