This is the town of Scarborough. It was the home of a fair for three hundred years from which came the song "Are You Going to Scarborough Fair?"
Here we are at Scarborough Castle on a rainy day. Rain doesn't put a damper on anything here.:)
The 3,000 years of history started in 400 A.D. as a Roman signaling station. They had fires burning and would uncover and cover to warn other stations up and down the coast. The site is on a prominent headland with steep cliffs. |
| The Castle was built in 1136. |
| It was besieged many times between 1157 and 1314. |
| This is the keep. There were four floors. The basement housed the stores. The second was for receiving guests and doing business of the king. On the third floor was the chapel. Personal quarters were on the top floor. |
