Our friend, Elizabeth

Elizabeth DeFranco came for a visit. She had been in the London study abroad program. We took her to Durham and were excited to be able to tour the castle. The castle was originally built in the 11th century for protection from the Scots. The Prince Bishops lived there till the 1830's when Durham University was established and the castle was adopted as student living quarters.

We could take pictures of the outside only.  Inside we first visited the original kitchen (oldest working kitchen in Europe), the Great Hall which is now the dining room, and the black staircase which provided access to the multistory floors.

In the background is the barbican (guarded entrance).
As we visited the Cathedral today the organ was playing - which we had not heard before.
Each time we visit we learn something new.
