Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens

Belsay Hall is classical Greek revival villa built in 1806 designed by Sir Charles Mock (formerly Middleton).  It had no furnishings to show its fine craftsmanship.  The central hall had Ionic Pilliars which were inspired by building he saw on his honeymoon to Athens.

A short distance away is the castle..a 14th Century "Pele Tower" built as a refuge during Anglo-Scottish Warefare.  Note how a Jacobean Mansion Wing was added later.

The gardens were built in a stone quarry where stone was cut for his Hall.

Beautiful garden path with rock wall arches.

Lovely nook
