Rievaulx Abbey

Twelve Clairvaux monks came here from France in 1132 to found the first Cistercian Abby in Northern England.  The land was granted by Walter Expec of Helmsley Castle.  Thus began what was to become one of the wealthiest monastaries of Medieval England.

Henry VIII formed the Church of England, and in 1538 "dissolved" the abbey, taking all its wealth for himself, and pensioning off the monks or killing those who opposed. In a few years the abbey was in ruins.
